You want to grind/thin the backside of the holes to start.    A Dremel with a ball-shaped steel cutter is good for this.   Leave a thin cover (+/- 0.010") of plastic on the backside of the hole then open & clean up with an Xacto knife.

Would a Dremel be able to open up the oval shaped holes?

I also have this model and haven't started on it yet but I was planning to use a dremel drill for the round ones. Not sure how to address the oval ones and keep a straight edge between the curved ends.
