The Search for the Beagle
Posted by steves on Friday, December 1, 2006 3:26 PM

I sometimes watch a TV show called "Meet the Ancestors", which is usually about digging up old ruins and/or bones at various locations in Britain.   The other night I happened to catch an episode entitled "The Search for the Beagle" which told the story of the ship and of a marime archeologist who believes he has found her remains.   It was an interesting and informative show, but unfortunately (and typically) I fell asleep about 10 minutes before the end and missed whether he had found the ship or not.  Curious about the ending I tried an internet search to try to find out what the outcome had been.   I was amazed to find that the entire show (sans commercials no less), plus other shows in the series, can be viewed at this website:

Scroll down to the "UK" heading.

And here is an article with further information:

Apparently, as with many BBC-produced programs, we've had to wait a couple of years to see this, so this may be old news to some.

Thanks for that, Steve.  I saw that doco some time ago on Australian TV (on the ABC - no commercials!!) but it was interesting to revisit it.  It's a great shame the importance of this unique ship wasn't appreciated at the time and lengths taken to preserve her.  That's always the way isn't it?  It takes later generations to see the significance of what at the time is a useless, worn-out artifact.
