Question about the USS Utah
Posted by uproar on Sunday, December 3, 2006 11:30 AM

Greetings,

Does anyone know of any available models of the USS Utah, sunk 7 December 1941?  I've always been rather amazed that after 65 years, there still has never appeared to have been a model produced of the vessel--I hope I'm wrong.  62 men died on that ship that day (no, wait..."56 men and 6 Officers", as sources say, as if the officers were of another species).

My late father, Robert (died 1999) was a Pearl Harbor survivor, and managed to escape the ship moments before it capsized and sank.  There is a well known photograph, taken from a Japanese plane, of the Utah listing heavily to port after it was torpedoed (almost immediately after the attack began--the attack started at 7:55 am; the Utah was a total loss by about 8:12 am).  I have always imagined that my dad was in the photograph, some tiny little dot in the water, swimming to shore, narrowly escaping bullets, as the Utah capsized.

I've always wanted to build that ship...I'm not tremendously into building warships, but I would certainly make an exception if I could find the Utah.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

At this time there is no kit of Utah on the market in plastic or resin. The future may see Utah and some of the other older USN dreadnoughts brought out in 1/350 by ISW as they seem to be determined to bring out one of each class of USN dreadnoughts in 1/350. I am hoping for Combrig to bring them out in 1/700 but I don't think the target ship rig would be all that appealing to too many modelers of USN BBs. Most of the Pearl Harbor era BBs are available in resin in 1/700 but except for Maine, Kearsarge/Kentucky and Oregon the older ships aren't in production. In 1/350 there are some nice models available: Maine, Texas, Oregon, Iowa, Kearsarge, Illinois and Michigan as well as later US BBs.

Rory,

Althought I can not answer your inquiry as to available kits of the Utah, I would like to mention to you a wonderful article about the Medal of Honor awarded to Chief Watertender Peter Tomich of the Utah for action on Dec 7 1941. The article appears in the Dec 2006 issue of The American Legion magizine titled: A Hero's Mystery. If your late father served on this ship, I am sure you will be warmed by this story.
