Hi Tom,

I'm in the process of building the USS Fletcher by Tamiya in 1/350 scale.  I noticed the dark blue deck, so I airbrushed the main deck, bridge, gun and signal decks first.  I dull coated the finished decks and then I hand painted the non-stick surface which is prevalent on Navy ships, so I had to use a steady hand.  If there were any booboo's the dull coat makes it easy to clean up any mistakes.  If you're airbrushing the bulkheads you really don't need to mask anything if you paint them at the proper angles.  You should paint the parts with deck surfaces first.  I'm only half finished but so far its coming out OK.  After its finished I'll post on the site.  Good luck and I hope this helps.

I'm working on a Tamiya Fletcher Class destroyer in 1/350 scale (my first surface ship), which shows a dark blue deck surface.  What's the best technique for applying this deck color, especially for smaller components like observation decks and gun mounts?  Can't decide whether to spray all the deck color and then mask it all before painting the vertical surfaces, or the other way around. Either way, it seems like a long tedious masking job ahead.  Also, should I paint the parts with deck surfaces before assembly or wait until the assembly is done and then mask and paint?  Any ship painting tips will be greatly appreciated.
