I was looking at photos of salvage attemps and noticed what looked like a bumper attached to the quays. Am I right or wrong.  Thanks, Hank. Support The Troops

If you mean the ones on "battleship row", I have a photo of the Arizona tied up pre dec 7, but can't really tell whether there's a bumper on the quay or not. Aren't they still there, tho ??

The quays are still there, the names of the vessels that were tied to them during the attack are painted on them.

subfixer, do you know if the quays had a bumper attached to them because some photos  I have seen show something on the ship side of the quay. Thanks, Hank.  Support The Troops! Garry Owen

I don't believe the quays had bumpers, or "fenders" as they are also called. I had a temporary assignment to Pearl Harbor in 2003 and took pictures of all the quays but as they were digital pictures and I lost them in my latest computer crash, I can't pull them up anymore. Try a search of the Arizona Memorial for pictures, I have a feeling that quays will be on a few of them. Here is a link that I hope will help:http://www.ccdemo.info/PearlHarbor/LargeArizMemPg2.html

subfixer, thank you for for the link to the site. The quays visible in the photo show no fenders on the quays. I just received Mr. Stillwells book on the U.S.S. Arizona but have not really looked thru it yet. Again thank you very much for your help.  Hank, Support The Troops Garry Owen

Not there now, but if you look at the above photo from 1943 there were some bumpers around the concrete quays at that time.

Now, as to whether they were present in 1941 or were added during the salvage operations that question can be answered with just a bit more research ...

Bumpers are clearly shown on the quay beyond the forward wreckage

To EdGrune, the photo of the wreck of the Ariz. settles the question that the fenders were there before the attack. Thank you, Hank. Support The Troops  Garry Owen
