Waves on the base - how do you corral them?
Posted by mfsob on Thursday, April 26, 2007 11:21 AM

I am finally - I think - done with my WWII Liberty ship and am ready to move on to the base. I'm going to make my first attempt at water, using the acrylic gel method, but - I want to show my Liberty in a typical North Atlantic winter setting, i.e., pretty darn big waves! - and am at a loss as to how to have those tall waves going out to the edge of the display base and ending in reasonably perpendicular angles.

I thought about using appropriately-sized plastic strip or sheet to build "walls" around the base, but the gel would stick to that as well. Any suggestions before I make to hideous a mess would be appreciated.

i always use styrofoam sheet and a dremel tool to dig the waves out then take liquitex gloss super heavy gel to refine the waves, then paint to your liking and finally put a thick layer of liquitex gloss medium & varnish on to make it really shine

you can't really tell but the waves do have a good shine to them

Well, the plastic strip walls didn't work, the darn stuff clung to them as tenaciously as the base.

Would it not be easiest to use the plastic walls but cut them down to the wave's contours and paint afterwards?

This was how I wanted to display my Liberty but I've since pulled my horns in and will depict it anchored on a calm sea.

If you are looking to have "clear" edges to the waves, try: making a master of the shape of the waves, with the impression of the hull. make a mold of that master, and cast the waves using "Magic Water", from  www.unrealdetails.com . You can email them for "how to" information.
