Italeri or Revell??
Posted by kustommodeler1 on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 6:47 AM

I was going to buy Italeri's 1/720 scale U.S.S. Ronald Reagan CVN-76, but most places I looked it was out of stock. So, I went ahead and bought Revell Germany's release.

Well, to my surprise, the box says, "Made in Italy" on it,and almost every part reminds me of both an Italeri Nimitz and Eisenhower that I had several years back. I'm serious, it was deja vu when I opened it up.

There are several parts trees that are new, just for the Reagan such as the island, masts, and aircraft, along with the bubous bow that the Reagan has. But they didn't delete the older release parts completely. Most of the old island parts are there, even the old SPS-43 radar as is the original bow, but all the parts that are not used on the Reagan are pointed out in the instructions by heavy shading out, with the key "Do not use".

All the parts in the kit, new and old, are utterly flawless, no flash anywhere, not even a hint. I suspect it's made by Italeri for Revell Germany.

Does anyone agree?

A lot of these companies buy out other companies' molds and then in order to fluff the market a bit for what many people will recognize as old kits, they'll spiff up a few sprues, add a detail or two here or there--the whole thing is going on in armor, where Italeri bought all the old ESCI 1/72 molds and are currently re-releasing a slew of them with better link-to-link tracks. Happens a lot lately in armor, where a revolution is ongoing with this new "slide molding" and it seems a lot of Eastern European countries are swapping molds of older kits!

Revell Germany re-box a lot of Italeri stuff - aircraft and armour, not just ships. Anything modern and in 1/720 in a Revell AG box is almost certainly of Italeri origin. The major exception is CVN-65 USS Enterprise, which is a Revell original, as are all Revell AG WW2 1/720 ships. The way to check is to look on the side of the box, where you will find a small panel giving technical information. If it says 'Made in Italy' it's Italeri.

Revell AG moden naval stuff in 1/700 is usually ex-Dragon/ Skywave.

Bear in mind that the Revell AG re-boxings are often significantly more expensive than the Italeri originals, though they do come with better decals. Also, for aircraft carriers, the Italeri decals are often inaccurate. If you're going to use aftermarket decals, (not really relevant for ship models) therefore, you're better off going for the Italeri original.

Cheers,

Chris.
