Consistant smaller scale for subs?

   Go with Revell 1/144 scale Type VIID minelayer sub!!! Its amazing!!!! The fit is exellent and the surface detail is unbelivable. I built 2 already and really looking forward to get the normal type VIIC that was just released by them this month!

As intruder_bass says, 1/144 is probably the best sub scale smaller than 1/72 - you can get Type VIId (minelayer), VIIc, XXI and XXIII U-boats, early and late-war Gatos, and quite a few modern US, Soviet and Chinese subs.

On a smaller scale, in 1/400 you can get a wide variety of U-boats (from Mirage), the Polish ORP Orzel, a British U-class, and various WW2 Soviet types.

There's a new range of 1/350 scale subs coming from a Russian firm called Flagman. We just received their first, a 1/350 Type VIIC/41 and it looks pretty good, and quite inexpensive. They have quite a few more listed, but this is the only one out yet.

I've seen a few smaller ships in 1/700, not much to them. As far as shelf space, you're not the only one. I see these great 1/32 scale aircraft kits, 1/72 subs and destroyers and think that looks fun...   If I built just that and never did another model, I just can'tsee spending all that time and money just so I could put it in a box and store it in my garage. I tried to convince my wife a 1/72 scale Gato would look great hanging from the ceiling but she's not buyinig that one.
