Thanks, for the additional info. I'll have a look at the 1/350 stuff too.

I've seen a few smaller ships in 1/700, not much to them. As far as shelf space, you're not the only one. I see these great 1/32 scale aircraft kits, 1/72 subs and destroyers and think that looks fun...   If I built just that and never did another model, I just can'tsee spending all that time and money just so I could put it in a box and store it in my garage. I tried to convince my wife a 1/72 scale Gato would look great hanging from the ceiling but she's not buyinig that one.

What, you mean I'm not the only one who doesn't have shelf space for these 1/72 monsters? All kidding aside, don't go with 1/700 unless you like trying to make really, really small slabs of plastic or resin look like something other than ... slabs. I too fell prey to the impulse bug with a Tamiya 1-58 (late) in that scale, and when I opened the box, my first thought was, "Glad this thing was on sale!"

There's a new range of 1/350 scale subs coming from a Russian firm called Flagman. We just received their first, a 1/350 Type VIIC/41 and it looks pretty good, and quite inexpensive. They have quite a few more listed, but this is the only one out yet.

Cheers,

The Mirage 1/400 subs are nice but lack a few details, chiefly hand rails. There are PE kits available for them, but those are a bit pricey.

Thanks, I haven't seen most of these. My LHS doesn't have the greatest selection and since subs are kind of an impulse item (hey that looks fun to build) I haven't really done any looking online. I can deal with 1/144 thanks.

As intruder_bass says, 1/144 is probably the best sub scale smaller than 1/72 - you can get Type VIId (minelayer), VIIc, XXI and XXIII U-boats, early and late-war Gatos, and quite a few modern US, Soviet and Chinese subs.

On a smaller scale, in 1/400 you can get a wide variety of U-boats (from Mirage), the Polish ORP Orzel, a British U-class, and various WW2 Soviet types.

Go with Revell 1/144 scale Type VIID minelayer sub!!! Its amazing!!!! The fit is exellent and the surface detail is unbelivable. I built 2 already and really looking forward to get the normal type VIIC that was just released by them this month!

Consistant smaller scale for subs?

I's there a source subs smaller than the 1/72 scale monsters in a consistant scale? Styrene would be prefered but resin is ok, and assumed to be the most likely option. I've thought about building a sub but it seems like they are all over the place in scale 1/144, 1/122, 1/288 etc. I think anything smaller than 1/350 would be too small for me to have fun with, but 1/72 is way more sub than I can display. Primarily interested in WW2 era but having the option of some modern and earlier subs would be a plus. Thanks
