May I ask, did Neil ever build this model? I would like to do what he proposed but I wonder - what's new? I've never ventured far from building the model exactly as designed!

Thank you all for the great information. You've given me some excellent information. If you have any more information on any kits available please let me know. The resin kit looks to be about a close match with some modifications.

I think I'd be tempted to start with a Loose Cannon USS Artemis.

http://home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/Kit46.html

It will get you a similar hull, superstructure, two-stacks ...   You'll need to scratch build the goal-posts and do something about the boat load-out (delete, change) to make an AP out of the AK

Here's a link:

The experts may know of a model, but it escapes my amateurs search. One of eleven in her class.

Good evening;

I'm normally in the Aircraft forums but I've been commissioned to build a ship model for a client and I'm attempting to find out if there are any ship models of US Army Transports and where to get more information on the history and pictures of this type of vessel. The one I'm researching is the USAT Rear Admiral Hughes. It hauled my clients dad from the Philippines back to the US around 1944.  If any one can help me out, that would be great.

Thank you

You might wish to start at this site: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-us-cs/army-sh/army-sh.htm
which lists a number of US Army vessels. I did not see the ship you mentioned but the name you were given may be incomplete. Other portions of the site may have what you are looking for.

Well, it would seem that Al and I were working on a reply at the same time. How's that for a quick answer? WS

Grover's Army Ships and Watercraft of World War II does not list any USAT by this name.  More than likely, you're referring to ADMIRAL C.F. HUGHES (AP 124), a Navy troop transport transferred to the Army post-WWII as GENERAL EDWIN D. PATRICK.  This vessel was a P2-SE2-R1 built by Bethlehem at Alameda and commissioned 11JAN45.

Plans for this ship and her sisters are available from:

Ship Plans, Maritime Collections, NHAH-5010/MRC 628, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560

Several photos of HUGHES are viewable at http://www.navsource.org/, one for the time period being http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/22/092212406.jpg
