1/350 Detail sets?
Posted by Huxy on Friday, June 20, 2008 2:52 PM

Hi all. Been thinking of getting a Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck or Tirpitz. But I have problems finding some detail sets, as Photoetch. I would like some recommendations, hopefully not the priciest one.

And what I am looking for the most is handrails, as I think myself those are the most important. And hopefully, an online shop located in the UK would be nice. but desperate times needs desperate measures :)

Thanks,

-Huxy

http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/   Try this link, it is pretty reliable. There are others.

Also, Gold Medal Models produces an excellent set.  Although not in the UK, you could get this set from www.steelnavy.com or www.modelwarships.com.

42$ for the Gold Medal Models one...  Does it include everything I need? Enough railings and such? Don't know if I do have enough money. But will surely consider it!

Gold Medal's Bismarck/Tripitz set is very complete

http://www.goldmm.com/

You can order GMM products from White Ensign, although you will have to pay postage for it.  WEM ships their own products postage free.

White Ensign's Bismarck/Tirpitz set comes in two frets

Which is better?   Well its like that old question, which of your children do you love the most?  They are both excellent.  Many modelers choose to mix-n-match.

My two cents worth, having used Gold Medal Models, Toms Model Works and White Ensign Models, all are good, but - I have never, once, had a fit issue with any Gold Medal Models PE set. And in 1/700 scale, that counts for a lot.

Of those two I go for the GMM, as it's cheaper :)

The GMM set includes all the railing you will need for one model, as well as radars and other small details. It does not include watertight doors or eyebrows and portholes.

Unfortunately, the Tamiya kits also have very bare bulkheads as far as watertight doors and portholes with their "eyebrows" are concerned. The Revell Bismarck in 1/350 scale is much superior in this regard. Should you wish that level of detail, you will need to get PE for those as well.

I agree with an earlier posting . . . I have never gone wrong with Gold Medal Models photoetch.

So if I get the two following PE sets, am I then good to go?

WEM 1/350 Kriegsmarine Portholes & Doors

And the GMM Bismarck/Tirpitz set

Do these PE sets include any instructions or is it one of those "figure-it-out-yourself" kits? :)

Thanks for all help!

Huxy, as far as the watertight doors, at that scale ... I don't know of those are molded on to the model you have or notm but, in general, PE watertight doors tend to look more three-dimensional and realistic. However, since this is your first dive into photoetch, you might want to take it a little at a time. You can always add the watertight doors later if you decide to.

As far as instructions go, again, Gold Medal Model instructions are legendary for being thorough, easy to understand and, in general, a Godsend in figuring out what goes where. There will be absolutely no guesswork involved.

If you were to get both of those sets, you have the potential for creating a very beautiful model. But, I agree that, since this is your first attempt at photoetch, take it slowly and carefully. As for directions, the GMM instructions are excellent and easy to follow. That is why I recommended GMM to you. First, their overall quality cannot be matched; second, they are relatively easy for the beginner.  Good luck!

Understood. Then I'll go for the GMM PE and look into adding some more doors in some decades :)

Thanks for all the great help!
