Apollo 12 Diorama

Very impressive, excellent work! Love it!

What an extremely well done piece of work.  Pete Conrad would have been very proud of this. 

really great dio space program is one of my favorite topics. you nailed this. im 50 and lived and breathed rhe space program as a kid.they called apollo 12 the rock and roll mission.

That's a great diorama! The only thing I 'd do differently is maybe having Al Bean "beaning" the video camera with his hammer! Great job!

I couldn't tell an accurate lunar module from an inaccurate one to save my life, but yours sure looks good - the slightly wrinkled gold foil looks particularly well done.

Very nice display base, as well. Yours is the first moonscape I've ever seen. Looks to me like you nailed it!

On the actual mission, the LM landed a mere 600 ft from the Surveyor and if I wanted to do a scale diorama of this, the whole thing would have had to be around 16 ft long. As it is, it's about 30" square and quite big enough ... it just fits on a display table.

And the base is a sheet of drywall, with florist's foam bricks used to build it up and covered with a thin layer of "PolyFilla InstaFill" (Spackle). Craters were made with a wet finger and various sized balls pressed into the spackle and sprayed primer with some lighter grey highlights.

It'll be 40 years in November 2009 ... I remember reading that Pete Conrad's first words when he stepped onto the moon's surface, were, something to the effect " ... that may have been a small step for Neil, but it was big one for me ... "

Is the Surveyor scratch built or a kit?

What did you use to build the base-crater?

The Surveyor, as a scratchbuild, took about 70 hours to do, including looking for photo references. The rest of it took about 150 hours or so. I was doing a 1/48 LM cutaway simultaneously.

And the foil is from chocolate bar wrappers. Adhered with Micro Metal Foil Adhesive.

And I toyed with having Al Bean and Pete Conrad posing together, but wanted this display to be fairly representative of the real event.

You just need Al Bean trying to find the camera timer in the sample bag!
