CA accelerator and clear plastic...
Posted by falconmod on Friday, October 4, 2013 7:44 AM

don't mix.   i was gluing a nylon antenna wire to the top of the canopy on my FW190 and the super glue was not setting fast enough so I thought I would use some accelerator on it,  big mistake the accelerator fogged the clear plastic!

I did manage to buff it clear again with some Novus #3 polish

And yes I was using a CA that would not fog clear plastic I have used it before on clear canopies and it worked great.  It was Bob Smith's super Gold.  Hope this helps anyone avoid the accelerator fogging mess.

CA and Alclad do not play well together either. I needed to glue on a small fitting after doing an alclad finish and put on a few drops of accelerator.  Really dulled that area of the Alclad.

Use a strong clear glue .Water or acrylic base.It will hold when not pulled hard.CA -glue and clear parts don't mix.Its like playing with fire.

Don, I now this is an old thread, but I just read it.  Good information about CA and Alclad products.  I am working on my Zvezda 787 and had the exhaust area of the engine come off while handling and I was just about to use CA and accelerator to reattach them.  They are painted with Alclad.  A quick question, hopefully you see this in time, does it matter if I glue the parts first using CA and accelerator and then recoat with Alclad?  Or, should I consider a different adhesive product?

I'm a big fan of Mod Podge for gluing clear parts. Doesn't fog and hangs on like hell. It's like Elmer's Glue on steroids.

I think the accelerator dries very fast, so I assume you could recoat, but why not just not leave off the accelerator.  The CA will set okay but just takes a bit longer. A good Alclad finish is a lot of work, so I'd just wait the extra time, and not risk damage nor the time it takes to recoat. I'll be recoating with Alclad would take longer than the setting time of the CA without accelerator.

I agree with Don. I primarily use CA, and sometimes you just have to wait. But it's faster than regular plastic glue.

I also use Mod Podge for canopies. Works great.
