Hi;

    The few times I've done it( On 1/32 scale and 1/24 scale aircraft) I have used a wash of alcohol and Pastels. This has worked and when good and dry I mist coat it till I know everything is good to go.

Some folks use a very sharp pencil. That avoids worries about applying solvents. Personally I use lacquer clearcoats and that works fine for anything less hot than lacquer.

Can you elaborate on your process with this mix?

I mix up pastels with water and a drop or two of dish soap for a pin wash and it cleans up with water.

JLKahn
but the turpentine I thinned the oils at through the clear gloss on my test piece like acid.

Wass this a "natural" turpentine? If so, avoid it like the plague. Use an oil-based turpentine substitute like Turpenoid (blue can).

Keep in mind that though odorless, there are still vapors, so make sure you have plenty of ventilation and/or use a respirator. Just because you can't smell it, it doesn't mean that it's not there.

I generally paint my models with Vallejo Acrylics and then put an Acrylic clear gloss coat on top for Decals.

What kind of paint should I use to do a pin wash with? Oil or Enamel? I keep hearing your pinwash should be a different type of paint from the base and gloss coat. I just tried experimenting with using an oil wash but the turpentine I thinned the oils at through the clear gloss on my test piece like acid.

I read somewhere that enamels mixed with white spirit is a good wash to put over an acrylic clear coat, but I was under the impression that any enamel solvent of any kind would eat through acrylic pretty quickly too.

Thanks all in advance.
