Painting question
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 27, 2003 7:48 AM
I've got what's probably a pretty basic painting question. Painting has always been my weak point, I can't often get good results no matter how hard I try, but I think I've just identified what might be part of the problem.

First of all, I do all the prep work, washing the parts etc. I don't have an airbrush, nor do I really want one. I use primer from a spray can, and paint top coats with a brush. But, I've just realized that my primer is enamel, and some of my top coat paints are acrylic. I know from painting in my house that I can't put a latex top coat on an oil primer, is the same happening with using acrylics on enamel? If so, can I get acrylic primer? I saw a can of Tamiya primer at the shop yesterday but it doesn't say if it's enamel or acrylic.

Thanks

Here in the UK, we have a fantastic range of automotive acrylic paints (Halford's), which a lot of modelers here use as primer. In fact, one of their spray is actualy called 'Plastic Primer'.. Maybe you should check your local automotive shop for similar products. They usualy are WAY cheaper than what you'll find in your model shop...

Having the opportunity to use different kind of paints for different layers (primer, camo, washes, weathering) is great but care must be taken because some paints will react with what is put over them... Acrylic over enamel is risky... particularly if you are heavy-handed (the opposite is fine though)

There shouldn't be any problem with Acrylic on top of Enamel. I usually use Alclad Lacquer primer, but that requires an airbrush.

I think the Tamiya primer is a Lacquer as well.

Tamiya has an acrilyc primer, check it out with your vendor.

Besides, you can use anything as a primer, gray shades highlight flaws and can be used as primers. To improve adhesion you can get gray matt spray cans. Nevertheless, I use enamels and acrilycs (both matt and gloss) carelessly to paint the same model and have no problems at all
