Question about washes
Posted by djrost_2000 on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 1:03 PM
I'm about to paint the water inlet holes of my sub model black, lightened just a little bit.
I've sprayed the sides of the sub with gloss lacquer.
Should I use thinned enamel paint for the wash?
Or should I use thinned acrylic paint for the wash?
I've heard that thinned enamel paint can eat into the gloss lacquer finish. I've also heard that spraying a lacquer overcoat over acrylic can cause problems.

Just wondering what I should do?

Thank you,

Dave

If no one else answers, get some scrap and try both techniques, to see what happens.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

if i may........
on cured lacquer........any wash should work
a wash is essentially dirty thinner and it's application is only to accent recessed locations so the application should fit the location........only use what you have to.......& check out Swanny's link below.........Approve [^]

Dave, you also might want to try using artist's watercolours, the stuff in the tube, not the blocks.

These have the added benefit, that if you screw up, you can just wash them off.

I sprayed my model with Testor's gloss lacquer. I used a wash of enamel paint and enamel thinner. I let the lacqer dry for over a day befor applying the wash. It seems like the wash ate into the lacquer.

If I use an acrylic or watercolor wash, can I spray a coat of lacquer over that after it is dry?

Thanks,

Dave
