I can only answer the tail light question! MM makes Both Stoplight Red and Turnsignal amber both are exact copies of the color used in tailight and trun signal lenses. As for an alternative go to any arts and crafts store and by one of those PAINT IT YOURSELF plastic stained glass window kits, the colors used in them as Perfect for models and come in RED, GREEN, YELLOW, AMBER, BLUE, WHITE, BROWN. great for tinting windows or shading windshields. great for Blue tint headlights and for airplane formation and navigation lights as well as tinted overhead windows and on armour for the vision blocks.

Tail and marker lights are the only place I use Tamiya paints. Their clear amber, red, and green (aircraft applications) work great for this. As with the post above, apply silver to the car/lens housing. Use BareMetal foil if at all possible. Apply clear amber or red as apppropriate to the inside of the lens. Attach with white glue after painting the body work and getting the level of gloss you like. You can blend them in with some carnuba wax.
Detailing the engine compartment can be a gret deal of fun. Find some references for the prototype in magazines, books or online. There are scale ignition wires in a variety of colors and prewired distributor caps and braided cable and rubber hoses. There are also many photo etched and turned aluminum accessories, too.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Talilaight and indicator lenses are best painted from the inside with clear colours(they look more realistic that way).
I don't attach the silver foil to the clear parts but rather to the car itself.

Personally, I stay away from markers as far as possilble. IMO, not enough control and too expensive, said that I do use the Gunze water based marker for panel lines.

i have a 1/72 airfix dh2 beaver model kit that was given to me last christmas, but it has no prop. i read in fsm that a clear plastic dis could be made to simulate a rotating
prop. the question i have is how does some one decide how big the disk should be?
so that it looks good?

Kalambach publishing has two great books on how to detail cars. one is race cars the other is for regular cars and trucks. you should be able to find them at your hobby store or co to their web site finescale.com. and order them from there.

well to do the taillights I would be careful which marker you use, some might run or not dry on the plastic (had that one happen once) others might be a little harsh and you may lose a little of the detail on the lens bevel...

its me again, i use tamiya paint markers to do certain fiddly bits like doors of USN aircraft and the doors of my enzo. if you are using normal stationary markers, they may not have thick enough paint, so do check that.

i presume you want tips on detailign the engine and painting tailights. to answer the first question, all i can say is just buy a snall brush and be careful Tongue [:P] to answer your second question, if you are painting clear plastic tailights red, id suggest just picking up a bottle of clear paint from any paint company, and then before gluing the tailight on to the area, back the tailight with household foil. attach the foil to the tailight with white glue, and then attach the foil and tailight tot he car with white glue. if white glue isnt strong enough, use a *very* sparing amount of CA (superglue) all you need is less than a drop. a tiny little smidgen is enough. i cant emphasize enough how little you need.

anyway, have fun and tell us how it goes
