If the lines are panel lines, such as around the doors, hood, and trunk, it will look more realistic if they are left. Take a look at a real car and you can see that the lines around the doors are always visible and they are always black (or dark gray) because they are in shadow.
You can remove the lines, but unless you take your time and do it right the model will look worse. If they are raised lines sand them off. Use a small wooden block and put your sandpaper over it. That will help keep the sanding even. As to painting the body, sure you can. I never leave anything the same color as it came out of the box. You will need to paint it before assembly or spend a lot of time masking areas you don't want to get painted. I'd also recommend that you use either a spray can or airbrush. That will look much better than if you used a brush.
