You can mix different color chalks together in the water to obtain a different color just as you can mix paints. This is handy for subtle shade differences.
I meant the chalk pastels. I didn't know whether they could be diluted with water. Now I know and I will try and mix them with water and a small amount of dish detergent. Thanks for your help.

In preparing a wash solution, is it possible to use ground-up non-oil pastel chalk to obtain a desired color? If so, what type of liquid should be used as the diluent. I plan on using the wash on acrylic paint.
