As Jon pointed out, decals are the way to go. You can also put down white bands, seal them, then add black squares to make the pattern. Tedious, but less work and hassle than trying to mask and paint them.

I did a quick search for "checker decals" on Greatmodels webstore, there are several to choose from. Mostly they are for 1/48 or 1/32 aircraft, but you  could easily cut them for your use. The other option I was thinking about was Scale Motorsport decals; I'm pretty sure I've got some "tuner series" decals from them with a checker pattern, but all I found on their website was tribal flames. They may be out of production, but you could email them to be sure.

Hope you find what you're looking for...

I opened my big mouth and mentioned adding a  checker pattern starting about the front doors to around the rear wheel hubs (its a VW beetle). It sounds really cool, and she loved the idea.  I am daunted by the task of painting a thousand squares on a very curvey surface. I'm thinking about using some pin striping tape cut into squares as a mask and then airbrushing it. Does anyone have and other ideas?

You "accidentally dropped" it?  Or search the web for said patterns. Got to be something out there, no?

           Best of luck.
