You could paint the base first with the yellow but use a laquer and let it dry thoroughly. Follow that up with a coat of acrylic (water-based) black that you could wipe off while wet or sand down a bit when dry. I would do it that way, wiping the black off with a cloth or something to get most of it off, then once it is dry, use a q-tip or something dampened with 91% alcohol to get the leftovers. Let us see the results... I have the same kit and I'd liek to see how your ideas turn out.

Painting Raised Text on a Base

I am working on my Star Wars Battle Droid with STAP.  It has been a fun model so far. While letting some paint dry, I was looking at the base and I got puzzled on how to paint the raised letters.  I know I want the Base Black while the text is either a Gold or Bright Yellow.  I am leaning more toward the yellow.

My Ideas
1) I though about masking but the bold letter of Star Wars is not a problem but the little letters of "The Phantom Menace" would be a paint. Also I masked should it be tape or liquid.

2) Spray the hole area Gold/Yellow let dry and spray with a clear coat and dry. Then spray the whole base back and let it semi-dry and use a Q-tip with school (I use acrylics) and rub the black off. The just seems too easy to mess up. And the black with the Gold/Yellow under it may not match. Not sure about that though

3) Do like step two but let the black dry and use fine sand paper to remove the black. I think the best to far, but I need to be heavy with sand paper.

What do you think? Or how have you done it in the past?
Thanks,
Jon
