First Airbrush and compressor
Posted by Skippy75 on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 7:59 AM
Hi all, i paint display quality 28mm wargaming figures and occasionally build scenery. Id like to get myself an airbrush.

Id mostly be it using it for priming and single colour base coats on figures, but id like the flexibility to be able to use it on larger pieces of scenery and things like weathering on tanks, etc. There are so many compressors and airbrushes out there im not really sure what my best options would be. I need it to be:

Able to use Vallejo or Citadel paints thinned with an airbrush medium rather than a special range of airbrush paints.
As easy and a quick as possible to clean.
To provide a very smooth finish using multiple thin coats.
To be able to use small amounts of paint.
As flexible as possible.
The compressor to be small and as quiet as possible.
Available in the UK.
And crucially, as cheap as possible for something thats going to last me.

From what ive been reading i was thinking a double action, gravity fed airbrush would be my best option? Maybe something like the "Iwata Revolution CR"?

As for compressors i have no idea what i need, i would only be painting for a maximum of 30 mins at a time so could i get away with a cheap one?

Thanks very much for your help.

The selection of your AB will allow a moderate power compressor. You can get a good compressor at moderate cost. Don't go for the cheap, no name brand which will not last long. In GB, you may want to check out the Revell Standard Class Compressor at Wonderland Models:

If budget allows, try the Master Class:

If you look, there are a few good feedbacks on this compressor here on this forum. Good luck.

Thanks, id seen those revell ones else where but they were much more expensive than that, i could probably just stretch to the master one on that site.

Would the iwata rev cr be a good choice for what id be using it for? It seemed to fit my needs, be in my price range and be made by a good name.

In UK, yes. It is more than adequate for any modeling airbrushing.

I prefer the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS which is available much cheaper in the US and only US$20 more than the CR. The finer nozzle/needle allows better detail painting when you need it. But it is quite a bit more than the Revolution CR in the UK.
