Oilless Compressor
Posted by Hyperion611 on Monday, May 10, 2010 7:21 AM

Hi I'm new here and wanting to get started in airbrushing model aircraft. I used to do model cars a while back and used brushes. Never really liked the way the ended up looking. I've been looking through the posts here trying to get information about airbrushing before I get started. I'm considering either the Badger Patriot 105 or the Iwata HP-BCS.

What I wanted to ask though was if this air compressor would work?

Please let me know what you think!

I can't say I would recommend anything from Harbor Freight. But yes, it will work...you'll need a good moisture trap and pressure regulator. These things tend to be quit noise too! You can pick up a good hobby compressor at Hobby Lobby using their 40% off coupons.

Gerald Voigt said most of the modeler on the forum said. You can find more opinion by searching the term "harborfreight" on this forum.

If you decide to go ahead with the one that you pick, buy a 50-75' airhose to go with it so that you can put the compressor in the garage and pipe in to air to your work area. Noise is usually the biggest complaint about the cheap compressors.

If budget is a real issue, Habor Freight does have a 100 psi hobby compressor which should be quiet enough for indoor use. But its reliability is an unknown factor.

I use a ten gallon Campbell Housefeld compressor that I've had for years. I just crank down the pressure and paint in the garage. I too would be selective with the Harbor freight items but some stuff they sell is really good and cheaper than anyone else. I have some power tools from them that I've used for years on wood working projects and never had a problem with them.
