New Formulation for Tamiya Dark Green?
Posted by Brian D. on Monday, September 27, 2010 8:58 PM

I have recently bought some Tamiya XF-61 from a couple of different hobby shops in the town I live in.  I have noticed that it looks different from earlier bottles that I bought over the years.  It no longer looks like the darker almost black green color that I am famliar with.  The color is more along the lines of MM Dark Green and maybe just a little bit darker.

Can someone tell me if this is a new formulation for XF-61 or maybe just an off color batch?  Am hoping this is a new formulation as it looks like what I would think a dark green should look like.

Thanks,

Brian

Can't possibly answer your question. However, Taymiya is getting more into hard core military colors: as of now they two of the "arsenal colors" for IJN warships. I'm not sure, but their XF 58 (Olive Green) looks a lot like other makers "Russian Green" and their XF-62 Olive drab is really olive and drab. Until there's some way to really tell one color from another on a computer monitor it's pretty tough to tell.

A model boat is much cheaper than a real one and won't sink with you in it.

Can't say whether it's a change in formulation, but certainly there can be variations between production batches. No two batches of paint are ever exactly the same . There is often an "acceptable tolerance" range for any given colour and as long as the batch falls within that range, that's it.

I have observed many minor variations in Tamiya paint over the years, it's nothing unusual.
