Masking Alcad II metalizers
Posted by TB6088 on Friday, April 8, 2011 11:12 PM

I'm going to be using Alcad II metalizers for the first time to finish my Vulcan shuttle, which will have many panels that I intend to paint 4 different metal shades.  I've already sprayed with the Alcad base coat for metalizers.  As I go, I'll be doing a lot of masking over the various metalizer coats, and I'm a bit worried about the masking tape lifting the finish (I use Tamiya masking tape).  I'd rather not use future or some other clear coat between metalizer coats because I think it would defeat the whole purpose by diminishing the metal finish.  Before I begin, I thought I'd check the collective wisdom of the FSM readers out there.  Any tips on successfully masking Alcad II metalizers will be greatly appreciated.

As long as your primer coat is well applied & cured & the Alclad is cured, you should have no problems masking with Tamiya tape. Alclad dries very quickly, but I imagine that you would be better leaving it for about 18>24 hours before masking over.

Applying the tape, painting & removing the tape in reasonably rapid succession will also help avoid any problems, as the shorter the length of time the tape is applied, the less chance there is of any possible issues.

I have just noticed that this is your "first time", a few things;

Shake well, pour & spray without a break, as Alclad separates quickly.

The lip of Alclad bottle lends itself to pouring paint down the side of it's bottle & your airbrush - a pipette or syringe avoids this.

Practice on some scrap or whatever first, as Alclad is quite unlike most model paints to apply
