"Future Floor Polish" as gloss base for decals
Posted by HyperViper on Friday, September 16, 2011 11:29 AM

I need to apply a gloss coat over a flat olive drab for decaling purposes.  I would like to try Future as the gloss base but I am concerned about how to apply it?

I would like to use my airbrush but have some questions about whether I need to thin it first and if so, with what? Do I cover the entire plane or just the area of the decal?  As I intend to overspray with a clear flat after the decaling is complete is there any interactions that I need to be aware of between Future and the Lacquer/Enamel/Acrylic clear flat   Also I would appreciate any advice or "gotchas" about this technique.

Thanks in advance

HV,

No, shoot it straight out the bottle!

Cover the entire model!

When I've sprayed my clear coat (Future) I have an old acrylic  display case like you find in Hobby Lobby for protecting your models and I cover the model with that for at least 48 hours.  This will keep any dust in the air from settling on your freshly sprayed Future.

To clean out your airbrush afterwords might I suggest a thorough cleaning then run some Windex through it (or some other ammonia based cleaner).  Then I run a paint cup full of alcohol through to clear out the Windex; but that's just me!

Best of luck to ya!

Hi there,

When using Future, after I spray it over the parts.... leaving for it to cure... after which I tend to find blots of the future accumulating at the corners of the parts and this can be whitish in color or transparent... how do you prevent this blotting from happening?

Thank you

At a guess I would say your spraying on to thick a coat and its pooling at rhese spots

Hi Slusher,

Thanks for the help and good advice, I'll give it a try.  It's a 1/32 P-39 so it will take a fairly large display case to enclose the model, but I do have a couple of sheets of clear acrylic and some acetone so I guess that I'll be in the garage for a couple of hours tomorrow...Sad

Again, thanks for the advice,

HV
