What is Maroon?

I need to consult color swatches.

Maroon is annoying in that it's often used to refer to any color that's between dark orange and dark red, and dark red and purple.

From what little I understand of color mixing, you start with red, add touches of either blue or yellow, then add black to darken to taste. Or you could take red and add brown to it, but that probably wouldn't give a maroon you'd want for a car coat...

As Doogs said, "Maroon" seems to cover a lot of colors, depending on whose chart you're looking at.

I can pretty much  what DoogsATX has already given you - and we're professionals! I'd avoid the black if at all possible unless you just can't get the paint dark enough using blues. All that being said, it's your maroon - unless you are trying to match a paint swatch you can't be wrong.

I think of it as the color of red wine, but there are many interpretations.

Way back in 1983, I ordered the first model Toyota Camry from the local dealership, I picked "maroon" for the color.  When it finally arrived, it was !**&%!  Brown, as far as I could tell.  They assured me it was the correct "maroon" color.  Always hated the way the thing looked.....Maybe it had a little red tint to it, but it sure looked *** brown to me!
