As Doogs said, "Maroon" seems to cover a lot of colors, depending on whose chart you're looking at.

Any of these close to what you're looking for?

Yeah, the Pollyscale color is. I need a gloss finish- is the Polly scale glossy?  And where does one find Polly scale these days?

Hi Don,

I always thought maroon was a deep red colour, like a red and purple mix, and a bit like a wine colour, I'm no Testors paint chemist though.

Cheers

I think of it as the color of red wine, but there are many interpretations.

Way back in 1983, I ordered the first model Toyota Camry from the local dealership, I picked "maroon" for the color.  When it finally arrived, it was !**&%!  Brown, as far as I could tell.  They assured me it was the correct "maroon" color.  Always hated the way the thing looked.....Maybe it had a little red tint to it, but it sure looked *** brown to me!

DoogsATX

Maroon is annoying in that it's often used to refer to any color that's between dark orange and dark red, and dark red and purple.

From what little I understand of color mixing, you start with red, add touches of either blue or yellow, then add black to darken to taste. Or you could take red and add brown to it, but that probably wouldn't give a maroon you'd want for a car coat...

I can pretty much Ditto what DoogsATX has already given you - and we're professionals! Wink I'd avoid the black if at all possible unless you just can't get the paint dark enough using blues. All that being said, it's your maroon - unless you are trying to match a paint swatch you can't be wrong.

Never dealt with maroon myself. but heres a statment from an art website.

I think of maroon as a reddish purple, or blueish deep red. Experiment with mixing the blues that you have into the different reds you have, adding a small quantity at a time. Different blue/red combinations will give different results, so make notes of what you mixed with what and see what you get.

You may find you just can't get a saturated enough result to satisfy you, in which case you should consider buying a maroon as a separate color. I think PV19 (pigment violet 19) is a nice single-pigment maroon color.

Hope it helps.

What is Maroon?
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 4:17 PM

Okay, you artists!  Went to the hobby shop a couple of days ago to get some red and some maroon paint.  They had lots of reds, but no maroon.  No problem, I thought.  I have a couple of neat pictures I downloaded to show the red and maroon car I want to paint.  I loaded the picture into my photo editor and "picked" the red and the maroon. I then looked at what my editor said about the colors.

I thought the maroon would not only be darker, it would be less saturated.  According to my photo editor the maroon was darker, but even MORE saturated than the red I selected.  Okay, what is the difference between maroon and dark red. I don't mind mixing colors, but in this case I seem to be way off base about how to mix maroon.
