I guess I'm old school...
I always start with the lightest color first, and get progressively darker. So I'd start with the white & mask it.

I do the band color first, then tape it over. If you do it the other way around, then you have to mask the rest of the a/c to prevent overspray. Not a big deal, but more work.
VanceCrozier If I was weathering it, and using straight white, I'd be tempted to put the white over the gray just to reduce the contrast a little.

Yeah I hadn't thought about that, the stark difference from the white to grey. Since this is a PH Val, it has been said those have little weathering due to this being their first real combat action.

In the Hanger: A bunch of kits
On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister
This worked for me.
Will do, thanks for the pointer.
i would make sure to burnish the tape edges right before you shoot the grey ,mist a sealer coat to help seal the edge and shoot straight down onto the tape at a 90deg. angle. this helps keep paint bleed to a minimum. i get the best results using these tech. good luck and post some pics of your Val!!
That's how I was leaning, figured it would get the straightest lines.
white first then mask off and spray overall color.

How would you go about painting the two white bands on the Val fuselage? First paint a wide white band, tape over with two Tamiya tape pieces, then shoot top coat grey, remove tape. Or shoot top coat grey, tape two stripes shoot the white, or other ideas?
