I have used their Russian Green primer.  It has gone on smooth as silk for me.  When I airbrush it I usually put 1 or 2 drops of Vallejo thinner.   I also prep my models by cleaning them with Windex.

Griffin

I've had problems with the Vallejo primer but there's a couple factors that are most likely to be blamed (mostly user error):

  1. I thinned with water,
  2. I was a first time air-brusher.

I would like to try it again. I don't think it was oil or release agent - I had washed with dish detergent and water.

What's the best way to thin this primer for AB'ing? What pressure should I be using?

Griffin,

I used Vallejo thinner, but it doesn't take much. Pressure's a little tougher, but I think I was spraying at 20-25psi.

Cheers, Aaron

I've had good experiences using Vallejo primer. It airbrushes well and gives a great surface for paint. Like all acrylics, the surface has to be clean. I usually clean the model with a mild dish detergent mix, the wipe the surface with Testors (formerly Polly S) Plastic Prep — I don't think the model can be too clean.

I've only used the colour place grey spray, but all this talk of Vallejo primer has sparked my interest.  I noticed Redleg used it on his 8" howitzer.

Not to hijack the thread - but do you thin it before airbrushing?

When I sprayed it using my "big" nozzle (.5 Iwata setup) I did not thin it...but when I sprayed it through my other AB I did thin it a little.  It is pretty thin already so you may not need to.

I have had the same thing happen. But since I don't wash my kits I am sure that had something to do with it. More oils from kit to kit.

That's a distinct possibility. I know I rinsed the first one with Windex and water. The second one (the one the messed up), I can't remember if I used both or just water.

Did you experience the same effect when you didn't clean it well?

Thanks by the way.

Love  the stuff , now available lots of armour colours , but since it stuck to one model & not the other, I suspect that the latter may have been a bit greasy, & wasn't clean?

I've tried the basic grey on 2 models. On one model it worked fine (stayed down, didn't lift with masking tape). The other...not so much. It pealed off as soon as I picked it up.

I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on these primers. Likes/dislikes?

BTW: I ended up grabbing my old spray can of Color Place primer to redo the "not so much" model.
