Decanting spray paint

My tried and true method requires a plastic cup (as in "Solo"), air brush jar, and a pair of latex gloves.

With one gloved hand I spray into the cup. At the same time I mostly seal the top (opening) of the cup with the other gloved hand to keep the spray in. I then quickly transfer the paint from the cup to the air brush jar. The reason being I once let the paint sit in the plastic cup for about 10 minutes. When I came back there was a spreading puddle of paint on my workbench top. The paint had melted the bottom of the cup!!!

I've tried spraying directly into the air brush jar but its a little to shallow and makes a huge mess.

Also, this should be done outdoors on a warmish day. Hold at arms length and be very aware of wind direction!

You could of course use any type of container in place of the Solo type cup. I'm sure some plastic would work without melting.

Does anyone have a sure fire way of sealing the straw to the spray nozzle when decanting spray paint? I have tried masking tape, duct tape  but can never get a tight enough seal to keep paint from spraying everywhere!
 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use jumbo straws that have a larger bore than normal. the type used to drink thick milkshakes etc. They are much easier to seal with normal masking tape

Or blutac and the paint just runs down the straw into the pot instead of spurting all over the place due to the bigger bore snd lower pressure .Much much better.

OH Boy!  a real reason the get another milkshake or malt  yum!

Depending on the manufacturer of the spray can you may be able to use the spray nozzle and straw from a WD40 can.  I keep a nozzle with the straw glued on and just swap it with whatever can im using.

you could also try putting the can inside a large zipper bag and then spraying into the bottle.
