you can lay acrylics over enamels, just not enamels over acrylics..unless you put down a layer of future or some sort of clearcoat. even then, i've still heard horror stories.

it's just the acrylic may look flat compared to the enamel. then just gloss up the acrylic.

The red layers I've laid down are enamels.  I didn't think acrylic paint would sit on the enamel paint?

Use acrylics if paint build up is a worry. dries faster to check the coverage too.

Thanks, I did in fact use v thin red layers.  I applied a slightly thicker layer yesterday and the preshade is disappearing.  My only worry is losing the detail.

Keep going with the red, sometimes depending upon paint and thinner ratios it can take up to 3-8 coats to get the right effect. No rules on how many coats you can have. 2 coats is never enough.

I presume the grey primer would need to be enamel based as the top coat is enamel.

Thanks, I'll try a little grey primer on a discreet part.

Instead of stripping the paint off, I would try using a lighter gray primer.  The primer should cover the NATO Black thus preventing the problem.  Some detail could be lost if you're not careful and apply a light coat.  Red, yellow, and white are notorious for being hard to paint.

If all else fails, I've read simple green is effective and a little easier to use.

Hope it helps!

Peace through superior firepower.

Help preshade with tamiya nato black toooo dark showing through red enamel overcoats

I'm painting the revell London bus and have made the mistake applying a NATO black preshade prior to painting Humbrol red enamel gloss.  I've already painted 2 coats of the red enamel and the preshade is way too dark still. I feel I need to strip the paint off and I'm thinking of trying a test with oven cleaner.  Any suggestions as to how to remedy this problem?  I think per shading is probably not required and I wish I just painted the enamel red first.
