What Red For B-17

Testors does make a flat red.  And, yes, if you dullcoat a gloss enamel, it will then be flat. In fact, some folks prefer to use gloss colors in general painting because they do not need to use a gloss coating before decal application (decals should always be applied to a gloss surface). They then dullcoat the whole model to give a flat finish for military aircraft.

I take it your using a brush rather than an airbrush. Tamiya is very tricky to brush on. You can't go over that stuff while its still wet. Its a real pain.

Thanks for the reply's.  I did learn that the de-icer lines are easy to brush paint because they are raised.  but the red I learned you can't paint Tamiya worth crap.  so I have opted to use the Testors Enamel Red.

The most likely shade of red would be Insignia Red, if talking about the red on the tail surfaces.

For red on US aircraft I would use Tamiya. I don't know what the FS code would be.

As for the de icer lines, I assume these are the black bit on the leading edge of the wings. I normally brush paint mine, but given the straight line on the 17, masking and spray would be possible.

Well, I went with the Flat Red from Tamiya, I hope this looks nice.  Also, I was wondering about the de-icer lines on the leading edge of the wings.  I do not see that these are decals.  Does anyone have any tips for these lines? or just regular masking off.
