Maybe you are shooting too much paint. Tamiya metallic paint can do that if you shoot too much.

For Tamiya use Tamiya thinner, 70% rubbing alocohol, or water. Clean your airbrush with Windex. Tamiya can be sprayed straight without thinning, but for best results thin it a bit (approx 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner).

I've recently got back into modelling and have experimented pretty heavily sorting out my methods. I've had the best results thinning with the manufacturer's thinner. If I'm using Tamiya paints, I thin with Tamiya thinner; similarly with modelmaster paints, I'll use modelmaster thinner. I generally use a ratio of 2:1 paint to thinner for airbrushing. I thin my acrylics with rubbing alcohol. It seems to be pretty commonly used (and cheap).
