Order / Type of Paint
Posted by Diceman on Thursday, February 6, 2014 1:51 PM

I have been reading and looking for a viable answer....here is the skinny:

From what I have gathered people base coat with Acrylic and wash with Enamels or Oils....

Or Base coat with Enamel and wash with Acrylics....

With the interior cockpits, trying to bring out the raised detail of the instruments. DO you suggest a emamle base, enamel clear, then let that dry and wash with acrylics.....or base enamel and dry brush the details......I assume it is just a preference......

Just trying to figure out the best order.. do some folks always use acrylics for base coats and enamels and oils for washes, or the other way around....

THANKS!

I use enamel for  the base coats,  washes and weathering overcoats.

I mostly basecoat with acrylics and wash with oils and enamels.

Some people don't like washing with acrylics,in that case you could overcoat your enamel basecoat with Future or Acrylic Clear, then wash with oils or enamels.

Its all personal preference. Depends on what Type of paints you like to basecoat with. I use acrylics that are water/alcohol base, such as Tamiya and Gunze. I use oil washes over a gloss coat, which is an acrylic gloss. If I wanted to, I can use any wash I want, not just oils, as a water based wash won't affect anything as water isn't a strong solvent. You can even base coat with enamels, then brush on an acrylic clear coat, then use enamel/oil washes.
