MM Yellow Paint issues....
Posted by Jack3l on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 12:08 AM

Ok... I am apparently having a heck of a time getting any type of MM yellow paint to lay down right. This is the only paint i have ever had a problem with that i couldnt figure out, so im sucking up my pride and asking the forums lol. No matter what I do it comes out almost transparent, and then by the time i get it to a point where it looks true yellow without a greenish hue to it, its too thick. I sprayed an aluminum base under it and that seemed to help but still didnt resolve the issue completly. What do you all do get yellow to look so nice?

Are you airbrushing it on?  If so, many thin coats and build it up.  I use a white to light gray primer under my yellows.  I use acrylics, so spraying a thin coat or two and then it only takes a few minutes to dry up to the point where I can lay down another coat.

I will have to try that, I am airbrushing it on and was using acryl and then switched to enamel to see if that helped, which it didnt lol. I am running a very thin mixture also due to it building up in the first place, right around a 50/50 mix. When i originally sprayed the acryl i was running light coats but it seemed to take so many to build up color and by that point it was too thick and covered detail. I will give it another shot with it though over the white to see if that works.

try using Yellow Zinc Chromate as your primer coat.

I keep a white primer on hand for yellow,  It has been years since I have seen ZC primer on store shelves (I heard it is a carcinogen).

The yellow ZC color in Testors square bottle. Not the real deal. I have used plain flat white under yellow with very good results as well.
