Thinning Floquil?

Test some and try it on a scrap piece of plastic. Then you can tell us :-)

I used to buy Floquil thinner, along with Floquil Retarder at King's Hobby in Austin.  The last time I inquired about more I was told that Floquil no longer sold the thinner but plain ol' hardware/paint store lacquer thinner could be used for a substitute.   Hope that helps.

I used to go to Kings in the seventies. I lived 2 miles away when I was in high school. Are they still open? I haven't been there in 15 years, or more. They were a big haunt of mine when it was just Bob and his wife in a little shack across the road (don't remember the road) from where they finally moved to. I attended McCallum High just to give you an idea where I lived.

Yep, they are still open and going strong.  A couple years back, they even added a slot-car track in the back room!.   I live in Cameron, about 75 miles northeast of Austin, and try to get by Kings a couple times a year if possible.  And I still order things by phone sometimes.  They are a nice bunch of folks.  Bob King sold the shop to a young man named Rudy Kline several years ago.

It does not say what it is.  It says " Floquil Rail Road Colors"  "Flat Finish".   The bottle is from 2003   It's F110015

Wait.. so I can thin using Floquil acrylic paint using Testors Universal thinner? Cool....

"Floquil Acrylic"?,,,,,does someone have a bottle that says that on the label?

I ask because I just checked 4 different "printing styles" of Polly Scale paint labels, and none of them say Floquil anywhere on the label. Even in the fine print, they either say "Testors" and the year, or "RPM" and the year.

And yes, Tom, "Testors Universal Thinner" used to say "Testors Universal Acrylic Thinner" on the label, and used to include Polly Scale's logo under the title, along with Testors and Pactra.

I don't know if the formula changed since they relabeled them to take the Polly Scale off of them. If it did, all it might need is some Slo Dri and/or Flo Aid added in, if that is what they took out.

You can also intermix Testors, Aeromaster (bottles only) and all three Polly Scale ranges if you want to change a color or otherwise create a custom paint mix.

As for the Enamel Floquil paints, you can use Floquil thinner, Lacquer thinner, or some "hot" enamel thinner, like Testors Airbrush Thinner. (the older paint had a different numbering system, six digits starting with 11 is the "new" Floquil formula enamel paint)

Yes, it is enamel. Here is the thinner designed to go with it, but you can thin it with all the same things as any Testors Model Master Enamel tips that you find.

Shrug,,,,,,here is a list of a bunch of "impossible to buy" Floquil Enamels, Polly Scale Railroad Acyrlics, and Polly Scale Military Acrylics, all at sale prices. You could try some of the colors that others have talked about, or you could replenish some of your stock, if they have a favorite of your's.

I like floquil.  My local hobby store had a 50% floquil sale to clear the rack.  Good for me bad for the fans of it.  Went on nice and smooth when I used it.  I just used Testor's Paint Thinner.

I went ahead and tried it yesterday.  The Flat Finish stayed very -- waxy.   I guess I will only use it for interior work.
