Shading with spray paints
Posted by Airborne_Trooper11B on Sunday, February 15, 2015 6:48 AM

Hey guys! Long time reader, first time poster. First I wanna say many of you guys do awesome work and really inspire me to "up" my modeling game! Anyway, I'm hard at work on a Monogram version of a C-47 and just wanted your guys' opinion.

So the short of it is, I don't own an airbrush and currently work primarily with spray paints on larger models like this 1:48 scale. That said, I'm just about ready to start painting and I was wondering; is there any way to get any kind of shading effect using spray paints? The idea that I have is priming the base coat with different shades. Maybe kinda spotting all over with white, OD, and medium green? (The final coat will be the dark green). Would this work or will the final dark green just cover it, come out one tone and that'd be that? Thanks guys!

It depends a bit on the brand of spray can.  Most of them have nozzles that put out a pretty heavy spray, which tends to cover with a thick coat.  The new Tamiya cans, and several other brands of small hobby cans have finer nozzles, but not all.

Not possible at all. You'll have much better luck using pastels and oil paints to do ur weatherering if u don't have an airbrush.

Awesome thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I did a few practice runs on some old models and the final result kept ending in whatever I sprayed on last. While I'm thinking of it, do any of you guys know how to post images on here, I'd like to show my progress but I haven't been able to figure out how to post them.

  1. Get/have a Photobucket (PB) account
  2. on the PB image select "direct" link
  3. it should copy as you hover and click on that link
  4. Back to FSM  use the "Use Rich Formatting" (lower left  next to "reply" button )option
  5. in the window that opens look on the tool bar for the "picture" icon ,
  6.  click that
  7. paste your PB direct data link in the space provided, click "insert"
  8. your picture will appear in  on your reply

Do this for each picture you wish to enter

Also works for emoticons not found on the FSM tool bar
