Glow in the Dark paints
Posted by Peaches on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 3:12 AM

I am planning on building a C-17 and using glow in the dark paints for the placekeeping lights.  Has anyone used any GID paints.  I tried the Folk art and it came off with the frisket film and the masking tape that I used on a test piece that I had lieing around.  If y'all have used any other type, it would be helpful.

I painted stars as little dots on the ceiling of my daughters bedroom years ago similar to the summer night sky. I don't remember the manufacturer but I do remember it was water based and I got it at Home Depot.

The ceiling actually kinda looked like you were sleeping under the stars, for as long as the "charge" lasted that is.

I don't know how it would react with masking.

Hey Peaches, yeah I've used GITD paint before.  (BTW, those are called Formation Lights or Slime Lights)  Here's a few of my examples:

Academy F-22:

Hasegawa F-14A:

Monogram AV-8B:

Its a really cool effect but there are a few things to consider.  First, it can be a little difficult to apply the paint.    The acrylic paints tend to be very thick because they are meant to be painted onto clothes or flexible materials.  Second, they don't stick to the models very well.  I solved these problems by thinning the GITD paint with Future.  This thinned the paint and made it stick the the model better.

Third, you have to apply several layers in order for it to be thick enough to really glow.  The problem here is that it is so thick that it not even close to being flush with the model.  What I mean is that it doesn't look like a decal.  It looks like raised surface detail.

Fourth, it only glows for a minute or two after you shine a bright light on it.  It looks really cool when you do it but it just doesn't last long.  But the good news is that the paint color is a perfect match for the formation lights when looking at it in normal room lighting.

Fifth, since the paint goes on think you need to use a new sharp #11 Xacto blade to cut the slime lights into their correct rectangular shape.  What I did was mask off the slime lights on the model, paint on the thinned GITD and use the mask edges as a guide to carefully cut the slime lights into the correct shape.  It sounds like a pain in the rear but its not really that difficult.

I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the brand of paint that I have.  I didn't keep the packaging and the bottle doesn't have any writing on it.  But I got it at a hobby store in the section where the paints for clothing are.

Hope this was helpful.  Good luck!

Fly those look really cool.  I had been wondering if anyone had done that same thing myself.  I saw some of the GITD paint in the hobby section at Walmart the other day.  The thinning with Future is a good idea, I suppose you could probably use just about any acrylic clear to thin it with.  I may have to give this a shot when I start my A-10C.

Wayne that looks cool.  I was looking farther down on that page you linked to, I wonder if that powder would work, mixed with a clear varnish to get better adhesion to plastic...  Not sure what the heck I'd do with that much glow in the dark powder, or how long it would stay good.

Thanks!  I haven't done this on any of my recent builds.  The last time I used the GITD paint was on that Harrier and that was over 2 years ago.  Its a bit of work to get it right and I'm getting lazier.Cool

Their website shows all sorts of uses but a number of folks have said it works well for inexpensive night sights on handguns. A good "charge" is suppose to last all night.

FROM the web site "The only paint that we recommend using on a weapon is Ultra Green Glow in the Dark Paint.  It is literally the brightest glow in the dark paint available anywhere.  After charging from a bright light source, it will glow reasonable bright for about an hour.  It will continue to glow, albeit dimly, for another 6-10 hours.

Shine a dark light on that stuff and it'll glow like a q-beam.
