Best way to paint raised areas of a surface?
Posted by Mark Lookabaugh on Thursday, April 30, 2015 2:08 PM

Hi all,

I'm building the Moebius Models Battlestar Galactical (classic/1978 version).  The base for the ship is embossed with raised areas including both symbols, and words using a fairly complex font.   the surface itself has a curved shape.  Picture attached.

I'd like to paint the base itself black, and just the raised areas a nice shiny gold.  Not sure about the best way to attack this and get a uniform result.  Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.  :)

Thank you,

Mark

Just to follow up, I ended up using a Gold Leafing Paint Pen with a square nib and a steady hand.  Followed that up with a dark wash to bring out the separations in the lines, and a follow up with more gold to touch up the areas that needed it.   The results were quite acceptable.  :)

I have used markers/pens a lot but also a good brush.  Thinning ratio is critical for good results on raised areas- it cannot be too thin.

That looks good. Thanks for the pic.

Over the years, I've wondered about how to do this too, so I appreciate this thread. Thx, guys.
