Best way to paint raised areas of a surface?

Just to follow up, I ended up using a Gold Leafing Paint Pen with a square nib and a steady hand.  Followed that up with a dark wash to bring out the separations in the lines, and a follow up with more gold to touch up the areas that needed it.   The results were quite acceptable.  :)

I have used markers/pens a lot but also a good brush.  Thinning ratio is critical for good results on raised areas- it cannot be too thin.
