I absolutely agree with you on the reference front, asking others is the best way to learn.
I don't have too much experience in your question, but I'll give you my two cents.
You can a) apply a basecoat for the overall colour, and allow to cure fully. Cut strips of masking tape, mask, and paint over with the stripe. Kind of tedious and very prone to errors.
The other way would be to use decals! Make sure you flat coat the whole thing afterwards to get a nice uniform finish
