Top coating a coat of paint before masking: Viable method?
Posted by tomservo12 on Friday, April 15, 2016 1:03 AM

Hi! I've been having a bit of of problem with Vallejo paints being extraordinarily fragile even after they've had days to cure.  I've had to make sure that I never handle the piece with my bare hands because the little moisture on my finger tips has rubbed the paint down to the Tamiya surface primer.  I've also had problems masking, with little bits sometimes lifting with the tamiya masking tape.

I thought I might try throwing a top coat over the first color to give it some protection before I mask for the next color.  Is this a viable option?  Would the paint adhere to the top coat well enough?  I have alclad's aqua gloss which is safe on vallejo, and I also have the other, lacquer based alclad top coats which I've been able to spray over vallejo in thin coats.

Thanks!

Sound like you didn't let the primer and (or paint) dry and cure completely.

Thanks for the reply!

In this case I'm positive that I let the paint and primer dry. Weeks for the primer, and nearly 2 weeks for the paint. What do you think the most conservative amount of time you should wait before masking is? I don't get much time to devote to the hobby which I why things always have so much time to dry.

Any thoughts in regards to my question about top coating between colors?

I don't put top coats between colors. I certainly don't wait weeks for paint/primer to dry. 24 hours is enough time to dry. I work exclusively with Model Master acrylics and Tamiya paints.
