Suggestion for Painting Aircraft and Armor Tires
Posted by Caddyshack on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 1:08 PM

I'm looking for suggestions as to what type and shade of paint people often use for painting tires.  I was going to use Vallejo black-gray and weather them by using a dust colored pigment mixed with enamel thinner.

Thanks,

Mike

After experimenting with lot's of different enamel shades, I've kind of settled on Humbrol 32 dark grey flat enamel for tires.  It actually compares well with the color of actual tires in use.   These Revell A6-E tires are painted with the Humbrol 32.

I use an old bottle of Polyscale Grimy Black. They turn out like Texgunner's tires. When I run out I'll have to go with Gary's idea.

Hello!

I'm for Humbrol 32 - been using it for a long time now. When showing old, really worn tires, even a lighter shade of gray could be used - it's actually all about looking at your references really carefully. Good luck with your builds and have a nice day

I tend to do a custom mix of black and white (Humbrol) until i find what i think looks good, but, generally, i about 7:3 parts black to white.

I prefer a more 'grey' rubber than dark black.

Having now seen the example of Humbrol 32 though, i may have to go buy a tin and give up this custom mix malarky.

The Humbrol 32 that Gary posted is what I had in mind.  Definitely will give that a try.

Vallejo Panzer Aces has a color labeled Dark Rubber.  I use it for my armor and aircraft tires.

I use any of several dark grays.  Most commonly I use Schwartzgrau.  Since I generally brush paint tires, I often do a mix to get some variation.  I sometimes like to get the tread area a slightly different color than the sidewalls.
