Fevicryl Silver through airbrush - should I?
Posted by sherbir on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 1:34 PM

So I was about to practice some airbrushing and had this question. I have the Fevicryl Silver which is a powdery paint. For brush painting, I mix this powdery paint with the binder and water and this gives a nice Silver finish. My question is, can I use this Silver with an airbrush? Could it have any unwanted effects on the airbrush?

Regards,

Sherbir

Never heard of the brand and for what it's worth, (personally) I wouldn't even attempt to use it with an airbrush. Considering the issue with the fineness of the powder, there's no telling if it would work. The question you really have to ask yourself is what are you to thin it with? Thinner?

Honestly, I wouldn't even try it.

Hi Sherbir,

I looked up Fevicryl on Google, and it appears it is only common in India.  That's why most of us aren't familiar with it.  You wrote that your airbrush has a .2mm nozzle.  That's really small for an airbrush.  It wouldn't take much to clog it.  Unless the powder is really fine and you thin it way down, it would likely clog quickly.  Also, if any of the powder gets left in the airbrush after cleaning, it may show up later when spraying a different color.  That would be my biggest concern.

Hi!

I would REALLY recommend against it. I would only use pre mixed airbrush friendly paint. I understand that there may be limitation due to location for you, but a new airbrush and begiiner painter with an unknown quantity as that paint seems destined for failure. I'm just trying to keep it easy and enjoyable for you in the beginning so it is fun and you are able to learn about airbrushing in a relaxed manner.

You can even use thinned inks to pactice. I use India black ink thinned to try new airbrushes, practice and  to check performance since it is basically perfect for airbrushing. Far better than trying to get the right consitancy, air pressure, distance, and cleanup concerns of the powder paint. Let us know what you do and your results please. Good luck.
