I've never ever had issues using Rustoleum Primer whatsoever. BTW - Rustoleum are enamel paint. Then agan, you could have used Rustoleum lacquer which are hot to begin with. Krylon on the other hand are purely garbage.

A number of issues can be the cause - high humidity could be the cause or even laying the paint too thick.

I have found Rustoleum to be very hot.  I even had the primer attack a styrene fuselage recently. It etched fairly deep lines into the plastic!  Fortunately the kit, an airliner, gave two fuselages, representing different dash numbers of the DC-9.  In the future I will reserve Rustoleum for wood or metal material.

HI!

It seems that the paints are incompatable. Let me explain. Some paints are hot, made from solvents like acetone, etc. Some are cool like acrylic paint. I am not sure if either paint is acrylic or solvent based. If the undercouat paint you used is hot it needs to gas out or expel the propellents and solvents over a day or two. If you over coat too soon it will still gas out, only it will crack or create orange peel effect in the top paint. That is what it seems you have had happen. That is why many do not use canned paints as they are hot. Many use acrylic primers with an airbrush.

You can sand with a medium grit sander to remove the old orange peel paint, wash, dry and apply the color you wish. Leave 2-3 days between changing paint colors to be safe. I hope this helps.

Get ahold of some Testors/Polly Scale Easy Lift Off (ELO) paint remover. Follow the directions on the product. It  is a recoverable problem.

Help with paint
Posted by ferg_1977 on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 12:32 PM

Anybody that has suggestions - I am all ears.  I was working on a OHP class frigate (Academy kit) and had primed it with Armory Grey Primer.  I thought it was dark, so I tried going over it with a Rust-oleum paint and primer that states it was fine for plastic.  It looks like hot garbage as the paint all cracked and looks look the model was covered in an ice storm of grey paint.  Is this a fixable project in any way or do I send this one to the bottom of the ocean?  Never experienced anything like this before on a project.  Thanks for any help.

I can't seem to get any pics to attach to the post so I am game to email them to someone who may have suggestions.
