Transferring paint from jar to jar?????
Posted by masonme2 on Sunday, November 11, 2018 7:01 PM

What's the easiest and least wasteful way of getting paint from on jar to another? I want to alter a shade just a little so I'll be adding a little at a time until I achieve the color I want. I want to be able to do this without pouring from one jar to the and wasting all the paint that gets on the outside lip of the jar. Any suggestions?

Eye dropper's work good.

Hi,

At my old local hobby shop (before it shut down) they sold a kit of empty glass jars and plastic pipets, for just such a situation.  The pipets are really useful in letting you "count out" the drops of specifuic colors when mixing paint.

PS.  Here is a link to a sample, but you may be able to shop around for better deals

In 2013 I bought a case of 500 3ml disposable pipettes from these folks.

The pic is a bit deceiving, there are actualy almost 2/3 of the original 500 left. At today's cost of $31/500ct, my cost is maybe $3-$4 per year. One of the better model-related purchases I've made.

Just what I did, I'm not saying it's right.

I don't know how the linked supplier's cost compares to others.

I did what Greg did from another supplier at about the same price, a really good investment. Another great eBay purchase was tattoo ink cups. They come in hundred packs in sizes from tiny to small, and are just right for mixing colors for spot work or figures, etc.,etc.

Best deal on jars is Hobby Lobby. I think they were in the craft paint section at a really good price (before the coupon discount).

I bought 500 1ml droppers for $15 on amazon and 1000 large tattoo ink cups for also $15 on amazon that's how I mix almost all my paint now except for a few like German dark yellow I mix them up in bulk and prethin it so I just shake the jar and pull what ever I need with a dropper.

Mike and Clint,

The tattoo ink cups seem like a great idea. I just ordered some.

Thank you.

I used to transfer using my old airbrush.  It was a Binks Wren.  I called the process

Jar Jar Binks

Sorry.... I couldn't help myself

Thanks,

John

Ordinarily I just pour from jar to jar, but I do make that mess at times.  Sometimes I use the old trick of pouring down a stick.  I use coffee stir sticks for this (also use them to stir paint).  It does help a lot.

For cases where I want to measure more carefully, I keep a set of kitchen measuring spoons- stainless steel ones that are impervious to any solvent and easy to clean up.
