Problem solved - Mission Models Paints
Posted by HighDesertmodeler on Monday, October 5, 2020 10:04 PM

I noted in a separate thread of the constant tip dry problems I was having with Mission Model Paints.  I thinned per their instruction, and also adding a little more or less, etc, and still the tip dry.

I solved the problem by using Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver instead of Missions thinner and Poly mix.  With our very arid climate here, Missions thinner and Poly has a tendency to dry out the paint on the needle tip.  The Vallejo Flow Improver worked perfectly with a 2:1 Flow Improver to Paint...yes, this is contrary to their instructions but the paint coverage was perfect WITHOUT the dreaded tip dry!  Missions is actually a great paint. Yes, it will take a little longer to dry but nothing to fret about.  I also spray down satin coats (Vallejo Poly) as part of my work flow.

...all is good!

I have been very happy with MM paints so far, where I am,their formula works perfectly for me,they spray nicely, level out beautifully, and clean up easy.

They do spray and cover wonderfully for me now with Vallejo Flow Improver.  Tested some mottling and fine lines...even with an ole reliable Vega siphon airbrush I can get very nice mottling and fine lines!

Still can't get Mission Models Paints to flow well without dry tip using their thinner and Poly...tried again yesterday and today with various combinations of thinner/Poly/paint on practice sheet stock and I'm back to square one...dry tip with frequent work stoppages.  I guess I'm shelving their mediums and I'll just shoot with Vallejo Flow Improver.

Maybe you've already done it but when I use dissimilar brands together I like to do adhesion tests and scratch tests . Give it a good time period to dry well. Make a comparison with whatever your primered test subject is using MM products compared to using Vallejo.

Great advice, thank you (I also use a satin varnish over the paint just in case)
