Are you spraying? If so, try it at an angle to the template, in light coats. Put a piece of masking tape on the back side of the template, cut slightly smaller than the hole you are using. It could form a seal against the model. Cut a piece of masking tape on a diagonal, to wrap around the part. The daigonal makes it easier to lay down straight, on a curve.

Thanks for your ideas. I have been using the plastic circle template, but find I can't get the paint from sneaking under the template.
