The colors will be the same, a spraybooth will only catch the excess paint and remove fumes. The guy was pulling your leg.
remember, a normal moter is ok, may present some risks, but if you want to be sure, get a squirrel cage-type moter, and the mount the motor as close to the booth as you can, for it to be most effective.
i saw that article on arc a couple of weeks/months ago, its pretty simple. in basic form, it's :
1. get clear plastic box, as big as you need , something like tupperware
2. cut a hole in the back, and mount the moter
3. get one of those foil-insilated tube-thingy's (forgot name) the same diameter as the fan, and long enough to go out a window.
4. enjoy.
